The original EKM iSerial TCP/IP to Serial Converter is a bit more expensive but it has 2 advantages over the iSerial v.2 for some installations:

Built-in dynamic DNS support. For installations where there is no on-site computer, and no static IP address, this iSerial will keep a service like DynDNS (dyndns.com) updated, so you can always connect to the iSerial and read the meters from over the internet.

For installations where the iSerial will be used in client mode, this iSerial allows the server address to be configured as either an IP address or a domain name.

Otherwise, if neither of these applies to your situation, the iSerial v.2 will perform equally well and save you some money.

If you will be using the iSerial with the EKM Reader software, no other software is required, but the manual included in the software download may be helpful. Software and manual for the EKM iSerial are here:

All it takes to get your “Smart” meters set up for remote and automatic reading is one of the converter/adapters on this page, some twisted-pair wire, and our “EKM Reader” software installed on your PC, Mac or Linux box.

We stock a line of converters and adapters which we have tested with both PCs and Macs, and have found to be compatible with our “Smart” meters and with our “EKM Reader” software.

Up to 30 meters can be connected to any of these devices in a very simple “daisy chain” 2-wire system. Each meter is assigned a unique numerical address, so each meter can be read individually. Inexpensive Cat-5 wiring works well for a few hundred feet. Shielded twisted pair is preferred for very long runs--up to 1200 meters, 4000 feet

The EKM iSerial v.2 TCP/IP to Serial Converter is our preferred solution for two reasons:

••Versatile and easy placement--One or more of these converters can be placed wherever it is convenient for connection to the meters, and conveniently located for connection to a TCP/IP (Ethernet) network.

••Flexible access--Any computer, anywhere on the local network (LAN) or, if the network is connected to the internet, anywhere in the world, can read and configure the meters using the “EKM Reader” software.

••Connect your daisy-chained meters to this device, connect the device to an ethernet network, and the meters are ready to be read remotely! No on-site computer necessary!
